Behind every established designer, there is a breakout project – a piece of work that catapulted their name into the spotlight and set them on a trajectory for success. For German designer Sebastian Herkner, that product was the Bell table. Launched at the 2009 edition of Salone Satellite – the annual Milanese furniture show dedicated to emerging talents – the Bell table was distinguished by its hourglass silhouette, composed of a colored glass base and spun-metal top.
The piece was picked up by the press and in particular, Wallpaper magazine, which published the table in its Milan review as one of its top five picks from the fair. From there, Herkner had meetings with various furniture manufacturers who were disappointingly unconvinced. “I took it to a lot of brands and they all said no; they wanted something more traditional,” remembers Herkner. “At the time glass and brass were still regarded as an unusual combination – it was the beginning of a revival for these materials.”
