The award-winning Plopp Stool’s artfully crumpled contours make it an avatar of Zieta's ingenious way with metal. With its whimsical but balanced 3-legged look, the stool is brought to life through the breakthrough FIDU technique whereby a pair of ultra-thin steel sheets are welded together around the edges. Inflating the construction under high pressure results in the distinctive shape, at once remarkably light and very durable and rendered in a choice of glossy, matte and metallic finishes.
How we dress the spaces we occupy reflect a lot about ourselves, businesses included. While some prefer harmony, where the entirety of the space is the intended statement, others may choose to be more expressive, using designs that individualistically speak much louder. Whether it's to spur conversation, or to be the star around which all other pieces orbit, we take a look this week at some of the more outspoken seating designs from our collection.
Presented for the first time at Fuorisalone during 2018 Milan Design Week, the Minima Armchair is the first upholstered armchair in Mingardo's collections.
Two soft cushions are hinges to the open, voluptuous frame handcrafted of black-finished iron tubes by means of straps that are intentionally left exposed as decorative details. The wide-looped armrests graciously cradle the seat and backrest that are upholstered with bespoke fabric in a warm rust color.
The Tembo Stool is a modern sculptural totem that combines a wood metal body with a solid cork seat. The designers drew their inspiration both from the African tam-tams-Tembo means elephant in swahili- and give a nod to the Memphis group of the 80's aesthetics. Designed by Note Design Studio for La Chance.
In 2011, the Endless Chair came to life as Dirk van der Kooij’s hard-fought graduation project. In a worldwide first, he had reconfigured a pneumatic robot arm to extrude furniture from recycled plastic.
The first series consisted of gently tinted plastic threads, built up shakily to form 3D tapestries. A mal-aligned motor imparted a scalloped pattern, though was also responsible for the unlikely tactitly of the technique. Whilst our current robots extrude with a steady hand, the scalloping has been maintained intentionally. Now printed from transparent plastic, the gentle undulations heighen light refraction and invite comparisons to cut crystal.
The Odisseia Armchair by Dooq embodies the aesthetic spirit of the space age, a new kind of discreet luxury and comfort inspired by a futuristic era created by new visual experiences and concepts of the future. This effortless but striking piece insinuates a luxe vision of the home of the future, as a new order of being.
Drawing inspiration from a plant, the Filinea Armchair is a futuristic armchair made of round, extremely slender steel bars. Natural and technical qualities have come together to form its airy outline.
The original idea for the Filinea Armchair came from the distinctive appearance of euphorbia tirucalli trees, which are very widespread in the South of Italy. The thin, intricately arrayed branches of the plants have been recreated in a seemingly impossible design. Tangled geometrical shapes criss-cross to create this ethereal chair. Designed by Antonino Sciortino for La Cividina.
The Kolho Lounge Chair from Made by Choice "...is formed of right angles and serpentine forms. It is inspired by Apollo landing and a small town called Kolho in Finland. The serpent represents temptation and chaos which supports the flat plane of reason. The space between Reason and Chaos is that of PLAY. This is the space where our human animal truly shows its greatest self." — Matthew Day Jackson, artist (Hauser & Wirth).
An inviting alternative to the classic wood bench, the Block Bench by Geology was designed to showcase the cushioning system visually and highlight the movement of the blocks. The compression of the pieces creates a natural curvature that is not only comfortable, but attention-grabbing. The armed frame provides additional support.
Smoothly flowing along the surface, PLYN Sofa by Faina is an embodiment of soft power. Strength of vast blocks, evoking coastal stones in mind, is soothed with feminine curves.
The PLYN Sofa is part of the PLYN collection.
The keystone holds the arch, one of the oldest and strongest and of all architectural forms. The Keystone Lounge Chair by PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED comprises three autonomous yet symbiotic elements: a concrete back that buttresses the spine, a gently curved ceramic arch for your sit-bone, and the wedge-shaped rubber voussoir that supports and completes the arch.
Archè by Imperfettolab is an armchair with a unique round seat and three sturdy legs. Designed by Verter Turroni.
Assemble by Valerie_Objects is a modular system designed by destroyers/builders, and encourages exactly what its name suggests: to assemble your own sofa. The asymmetrical cushions are assembled into different sofa-elements. There are single seaters to choose from, two-seaters, corner elements, poufs and side tables to play around with.
