7 Principles of Universal Design
This is not easy to achieve. Unconscious bias can often fool us into thinking that what works for us, will work for others. Where some see a beautiful smooth sweep of concrete steps leading to an impressive entryway, others will experience panic at the lack of signage, confusing sightlines, slippery inclement weather surfaces, and no easy egress via ramps or automated doors.
When the late Ronald Mace, Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, brainstormed the 7 Principles of Universal Design, it was based on his own personal experience, as a wheelchair user due to childhood polio.
